Before I get in to the contest, I wanted to let you guys know that after 11 years of Naval Service, I will be a civilian by this time tomorrow Thanks to all of those who have supported me along the way and I look forward to sharing my adventures with all of you in the near future!
Now on to this contest thing. I was nominated by a good photo friend out of Canada, Edith Levy. If you get a chance, you should really head over to her blog, Edith Levy Photography and take a look – she has some wonderful work.
So, Travel Super Market is hosting a “Capture the Color” Photography Contest, which involves the submission of five separate images, all representing a different color. Blue, green, yellow, white, and red need to be the main subjects of five photos. I had to reach back for a couple of these, but I think my resulting choices really embody the spirit of this contest. So, without further adieu, below are my selections, along with a little write-up for each shot. Enjoy!
Mediterranean Sea, near Libya: A dolphin Plays in the bow wave in front of the USS MOUNT WHITNEY during operations supporting Odyssey Dawn off of Libya last year. I was deployed on the ship as an Operations Officer and would sneak out as much as I could to take photos. For this shot, I was literally lying over the bullnose (forward-most part of the ship), holding on for dear life with my boots while clicking away until I captured the perfect moment. Still one of my all time favorites!
Tuscany, Italy: After spending a day driving around the beautiful hillside towns of Tuscany, we came upon this wonderful tree line, backlit perfectly by the afternoon sun. I was literally awestruck when I saw these perfect tree shadows stretching their way down the hill. Since it was a pretty hairy place to stop my car, I just shot out the window, resulting in the image below.
Barcelona, Spain: The Fontana Magica (Magic Fountain) is a short walk from the Fontana Subway exit in Barcelona, Spain. Ever night there is a laser light show for the fountain and surrounding historical buildings, incorporating different music from the 70′s, 80′s, and 90′s. For this photo, I set up my tripod and shot away. You can see the silhouettes of tourists with the golden fountain in the background. A truly spectacular destination, I cannot wait to go back.
Bari Zoo Safari, Italy: The Bari Zoo Safari is a pretty unique place indeed. Instead of walking around a zoo seeing a collection of exotic animals in cages, you drive through this massive park, animals out in the open interacting with each other left and right. One of my favorites were the zebras. Their unique, beautiful patterns are amazing to look at, and they have the most adorable eyes. Seeing one up close and getting to touch it was a wonderful experience. Some say these guys are rough and wild, but the ones who swarmed our car towards the end of our “safari” were docile, sweet, and lovable. I finally came away with this photo after many attempts.
Amalfi, Italy: On a super hot summer day in Amalfi, one of the uniquely fantastic towns on the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy, I caught this scene out of the corner of my eye begging to be photographed. Beaches in Italy are completely different from those in the United States, and as you can see, almost every inch of this one is covered! A fantastic town to visit, Amalfi is as picturesque as they come, rivaling, and in my opinion surpassing, the towns of Cinque Terre.
I nominate the following Photo Bloggers to enter their favorite images to the contest:
