Magical Fairyland

In addition to a wonderful trip to Roma and Napoli this past weekend, we also headed down the Amalfi Coast for some sightseeing, wine consumption, and amazing food.  Highlighted in this little jaunt was the ocean side town of Sorrento.  Rich in culture and beauty, Sorrento is home to some truly amazing spots.  One of my favorite places to see is Il Vallone dei Mulini (Deep Valley of the Mills).

An abandoned mill falling to ruin, Il Vallone sits quietly by itself at the bottom of the valley, surrounded on all sides by cliffs and shrubs.  It dates back to 900 AD and was used for supplying water to the town of Sorrento.  Abandoned in 1866 for a variety of reasons, including the intense heat buildup in the summer being too much for workers to handle, it was left at the bottom of this valley to slowly crumble.  I read somewhere that the property had just been purchased by a private party and might be fixed up as a tourist attraction or turned in to a hotel.  Every time I see it is just as stunning as the last.  Enjoy!

Thanks for stopping by! Check back tomorrow!

I find it incredible that these buildings were built in the most difficult locations at a time when the labor was completely done by hand. Any yet it still endures. Amazing, and a great shot to.

Adam – this is so cool – it has so many little easter eggs for my eyes to find – I want to walk along that trail at the bottom and explore the place from bottom to top.

  13. Nice one, Adam! You might not have much of a choice in where to make the image from and yet you still manage to create a compelling image.

Thank you SO much for this post. We stayed in Sorrento last summer and absolutley fell in love with the town. We walked by this structure so many times but I didn’t have any information on it. I did take some shots of it but nothing that wow’ed me. I think I’ll need to go back to those images now. Great shot Adam.

  20. What a great place! You captured it beautifully.
