Tango in the Galleria

May 8, 2012

This past Sunday I was invited out again to photograph another Tango event in Naples, Italy.  This one was being held inside the Galleria Principe, just across the street from the National Museum of Naples.  The entire Galleria was closed for the event, and I had free reign to take as many photos as I wanted.  Tango is an absolutely stunning form of dance, and all of the Italians who participate in this daily/weekly Tango “cult” are fantastic dancers and extremely pleasant people to interact with.  I have an idea for a gallery showing once I get back to the states if I continue to photograph these events.

All of the pictures below were taken with my D7000 and 50mm f/1.4 lens.

On a side note, shooting the D7000 at ISOs around 1600-2000 got me so excited about the D800 - If I can get these (relatively) clear, sharp, and low-noise shots with the D7000 at ISOs this high, I can only begin to imagine the possibilities once I have my shiny new D800 with me! Any day now…

All of the black and white photos were processed with Nik’s Silver Efex Pro.  Save 15% off your purchase when you order here!

**UPDATE** Shiny, new Nikon D800 is sitting on my desk right now.  I keep shooting it shy looks like it was one of my high school crushes.  Only a couple hours until I get to test it out in the field!!

    Buddy, great shots as always.

    But…

Is it me, or do i sense a lot of pain, in the eyes of all dancers? Was the music such? Or did their footwear bite them?

Personally, #2 is my favourite :)

  2. Adam Allegro says:

Ketan- pure, unaltered, deep emotion. It was everywhere. The music is beautiful, the dancers beautiful… It is very neat to watch and awesome to photograph. Thanks for the compliments! :)

  3. Mark says:

Fantastic shots Adam, all great but really like the B&W. My wife keeps trying to get me to Salsa Dancing, she has got no chance.

  4. joshi daniel says:

    that’s a lovely collection :)

  5. Rich McPeek says:

Beautiful shots Adam! Love the emotion you’ve captured in the dancers! Great work!

  6. These are all wonderful. I was captured by the emotion on the face of the woman in #8. Really outstanding set!

  7. Len Saltiel says:

Very nice shots Adam. You have captured the intensity and emotion of how they feel about their dance.

  8. ken bello says:

You’ve captured some wonderful expressions on the faces of the dancers. These are amazing!

  9. Superb Adam…I was actually waiting and hoping for these pictures! The third picture is my favorite…

  10. Edith levy says:

First congratulations on getting the D800. I can hardly wait to see the images you take with it. Secondly, fabulous series Adam. I love the 3rd shot. It’s so initimate.

  11. Justin says:

    Lovely, passionate set!

What a fantastic opportunity and what a great success you made of it. These are some great shots that capture the intensity of this dance. Ever thought of a career in photography back in Civvy Street!?

    • Adam Allegro says:

Haha, yes, it has crossed my mind… :) I will be unemployed staring in September of this year, and after my year of backpacking will need to figure out what to do… I have some ways to go before I pursue this full time. BTW, thanks for the compliments!

  13. Cole Allegro says:

    Dear Adam,
Now you are really talking my language, with pictures of dancers! There is something so special about dance. It’s something more altogether! I hope you dance, as well. You didn’t mention that. I love the expressions on the dancers faces which you captured. Also, you can make money selling pictures of dancers.
It’s great that you are capturing the soul of Italians.
    Love,
    Carole

Really good stuff here! I’ve come to love the 50 f/1.4 lens. It’s now one of my favorites for the shallow DOF and low light capabilities. I’m now on a mission to move away from zoom lenses and to acquire more primes. There is something addictive about the shallow DOF. Good stuff, Adam!

    • Adam Allegro says:

Yea, I feel the same. Especially on the D800. Cropping is essentailly a zoom since you have so many pixels to work with. Look at the 85mm (f/1.4 is considered one of the best Nikon lenses ever, albeit 1600 bucks or so.. and the 1.8 is also fantastic).

      • Rick Louie says:

Yep it’s amazing on the full frame. I’m actually saving up for the Canon 85mm f/1.2. It’s north of $2k so I need a few more large portrait orders :-)
